October – a month shrouded in great mystery. It’s a time of enchantment when the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds is thin. A unique energy is present, making it easier to connect with those who have passed.
These sentiments reflect the original purpose of Halloween. However, the way we celebrate today has morphed quite a bit from how it began. Let’s explore some history surrounding this spook-tacular holiday.
_____
A Protective Glow - The concept of light played an important part in Halloween festivities. As mentioned in our Five Fun Halloween Facts post, Irish and Scottish people displayed illuminated hollowed out turnips and potatoes in entryways to deflect evil spirits. When they immigrated to the United States, pumpkins replaced them, becoming the jack-o-lanterns we know today.
Spiritual Communication - The idea of communicating with and celebrating deceased ancestors was integral in Halloween’s origins. It was about having a healthy, conversational relationship with those who have passed and not fearing the unknown. For example, Día de los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead,” is an ancient Mexican holiday still practiced today that revolves around this idea.
Feasting is Sacred - Feasts were also an important piece of original Halloween festivities. The autumn harvest was a time of rest and enjoying the fruits of hard labor. As days grew dark and cold, folks gathered around the hearth for warmth and reflection of days past. They honored passed loves ones with offerings of food and light. In contrast, food was sometimes used to ward off evil in some cultures in conjunction with light.
Discover Primal Energy - As mentioned above, a unique energy is present during Halloween, but what about the one within? During this special time of year, it’s the perfect opportunity to channel your primal power. In the spirit of the season, embrace your wild heart and inspire your soul to be who you want to be.
